Overview:

The course will cover the recommended teaching progression for: mono-ski, bi-ski, 4-track, 3-track, visual impairments and intellectual impairments; lifting, loading & handling, etiquette, attitude and disability awareness.

Outcome:

The aim of the Adaptive Instructor Exam is to ensure qualified instructors are:
  1. Able to teach a safe, fun adaptive lesson (to a single disability)
  2. Able to demonstrate the use of adaptive equipment
  3. Have a good awareness of individual disabilities and their relationship to snowsports
  4. Aware of the adaptive aspects of mountain safety

Qualification:

Assessment is based on continuous assessment, a two day practical exam and a written paper on disability awareness.

Pre-course Training:

At present no formal pre-course training is offered, however adaptive equipment and instruction is available at the following mountains: Whakapapa, Mt Hutt (through Disabled Snowsports Canterbury), Cardrona & the Remarkables.

Eligibility:

People wishing to attend this course should
a) hold NZSIA Stage 1 or overseas equivalent
b) have experience of using adaptive equipment
